Younger: NDP Changes Tune on Political Advertising

October 6, 2011

(Halifax, NS) Liberal Communication Nova Scotia critic Andrew Younger says the Dexter government is changing its tune on government funded advertising that is political and partisan in nature.

“While in opposition the NDP railed against this practice and the then opposition leader went so far as to put a resolution forward calling for the Tory government to end its participation in a series of advertisements,” says Younger. “The current premier says he did not complain and that he ‘will not apologize’ – unfortunate statements.”

Maureen MacDonald, a current cabinet minister in the Dexter government, grilled then Premier MacDonald saying, “They’re prepared to spend more than $2.5 million on spin doctors, yet the Premier cries poor when seniors ask him to stop plundering their life savings.”

According to Hansard she said, “I want to ask the Premier, why is it so important to spend money convincing people you're doing something? Why don't you spend the money on actual programs?”

Younger says the premier cannot remember his own words and actions while in opposition.

“I could ask them their very own questions,” says Younger. “Why is it so important to spend money convincing people you’re doing something? Why don’t you spend the money on actual programs?”
